Founded in 1885, Audi has a long and illustrious history as a brand. Firmly established as a highly desirable staple of the luxury automotive market, Audi vehicles masterfully balance world-class speed and performance with high-end consumer features. Throughout the last decade, Audi has become a formidable rival to other luxury sedan manufacturers like BMW and Mercedes, but what sets it apart is its focus on high performance.
With each year, Audis just keep getting better. But what’s in store for Audi’s future? Here, we offer a promising sneak peek at several upcoming Audi models slated for 2018, 2019, and beyond.
Slated for the U.S. market, the new Audi S3 is a veritable super-sedan. The biggest upcoming change is in the engine. The current RS3 sportback’s 367-horsepower turbocharged five cylinder may be impressive, but for 2018, it’s on its way out. Its replacement is a brand new aluminum block turbo five banger. Sporting an exciting 400 horsepower, the 2018 Audi S3 will be capable of going from zero to sixty in a matter of only four seconds. Like a wolverine, its small and compact design belies some serious edge. Availability is expected for early 2017, so this impressive new design is right around the corner.
The fourth generation of Audi’s A8 sedan is coming in 2017 as a 2018 model, and with it come new technological innovations. One of the most striking new developments is Audi’s Piloted Driving technology, a semi-autonomous driving mode that will reputedly offer some pretty astounding capabilities. The 2018 A8 will be able to park itself, and will be partly self-driving up to speeds of 37 mph.
There’s also a new onboard entertainment in store, adding extra luxury to an already top-tier consumer brand. The MMI Touch Response infotainment system replaces buttons and knobs with one convenient dashboard-mounted LCD screen.
What’s remarkable about this 2018 Audi A8 is that it was designed almost completely from scratch. The brainchild of Audi’s head of design, Marc Lichte, it brings forth a new and revitalized aesthetic that’s sporty yet decadent, and fully modern in its design sensibilities. In this iteration, Audi’s signature “Singleframe” grille is widened substantially, with more sharply angled headlines. The taillights are slim and sleek, contributing to a compact yet streamlined visual aesthetic.
This four-door CUV will come to the market with a fully battery-powered electric powertrain, soon followed by a plug-in hybrid version. A fuel-cell electric version may also be in the works. As Tesla’s recent innovations have brought electric car technology to the forefront, forward-thinking brands like Audi have followed suit with their own partly or fully electric models.
The 2019 Audi Q6 is carefully designed for an aerodynamic profile, with a coupe-like roofline that minimizes drag. Designed according to Audi’s newly developed “e-tron” styling language, it’s meant to deliver a driving experience with strong similarities to driving a Tesla. A screen-based “virtual cockpit” definites the interior design and instrumentation, creating an experience that promises to be downright futuristic.
Well into the near future, Audi will continue to bring new innovations and updated design factors onto the US market. From new aerodynamic aesthetics, to cutting-edge electric cars and state-of-the-art LCD-based control systems, the future is bright for the Audi brand.
