The March 2016 New York Auto Show was not only the site for the unveiling of new Audi models, it was host to the World Car Awards. This is a special ceremony that recognizes the best in the auto industry in various categories and this year, the Audi R8 Coupe was once again crowned in glory.

The Audi R8 has been the most awarded model ever in the history of the World Car Awards as this year’s World Performance Car Award is its fourth time being recognized. The 2016’s predecessors have won the same award two times, and it has also won in the World Car Design of the Year Award in this highly respected competition.

Considered the flagship vehicle for Audi Sport, it is the distinctive design and driving dynamics that make the R8 such a notable model. Its unique qualities make it as close to a race car you can get without actually being one. According to Dietmar Voggenreiter – board member for sales and marketing at Audi AG – “The first generation of the R8 paved (the) way toward becoming a premium brand and raised the aura of Audi to a new level. The new R8 will continue this success story and further accelerate the growth strategy of Audi Sport”.

The Competition Was Fierce

The sleek Audi R8 had heavy competition at this year’s awards, with rivals like Ferrari, Porsche, McLaren and Lamborghini all making a stand at the car show. Yet none were able to impress the judges in the same way that Audi did. The last 3 standing before the final vote was heard were the R8 Coupe, Mercedes-Benz AMG C63 Coupe and the Honda Civic Type R, but the international panel of 73 automotive journalists from all over the world only had eyes for the Audi.
